DIY Mould Treatment in Northern Rivers: When It Works and When It Makes Things Worse

For many home maintenance issues, this is entirely appropriate. For mould, it depends enormously on the situation, and getting the decision wrong can turn a manageable problem into a major one.

DIY mould treatment is appropriate for small areas of surface mould (under one square metre) on non-porous surfaces, where the moisture source is identified and fixed, and where no one in the household has significant mould sensitivity or respiratory conditions. Anything beyond this, deep penetration into building materials, extensive spread, unknown moisture source, occupants with health vulnerabilities, or mould following flooding, requires professional remediation.

When DIY genuinely works

Small surface patches on tiles or shower screens: Mould on tile grout, silicone, or shower screens, typically green, black, or pinkish growth, is often surface-only and responds well to DIY cleaning. Use a commercial antifungal bathroom cleaner, a stiff grout brush, and proper PPE (rubber gloves, N95 mask, eye protection). Clean in a well-ventilated space, rinse thoroughly, and dry. For recurrent grout mould, regrout with mould-resistant grout and seal with a penetrating grout sealer.

Small ceiling spots from condensation: A circular condensation spot on a bathroom ceiling, typically where steam has repeatedly contacted the same area, can be cleaned if it’s caught early and the ventilation is improved. This is genuinely a DIY-accessible job if the spot is isolated and less than about 30cm in diameter.

Mould on window frames (non-porous): Aluminium or uPVC window frames with surface mould can be cleaned with antifungal cleaner. Wooden window frames are more complex, they absorb moisture and mould penetrates into the timber grain. Surface cleaning on timber window frames is rarely sufficient.

Mould on hard, non-porous furniture surfaces: Glass, metal, sealed plastic, these can be cleaned effectively by careful DIY treatment.

When DIY is ineffective (and can make things worse)

Mould on plasterboard/drywall: Plasterboard is highly porous. Once mould has established on its surface, it has penetrated into the paper face and the gypsum core. Surface cleaning removes visible growth but leaves living mould within the material. The treated area will regrow. Plasterboard with established mould should be removed and replaced, this is a professional task, done with appropriate containment.

Mould on timber framing or structural timber: Timber framing that has absorbed enough moisture to support mould has typically been saturated for an extended period. Surface treatment with spray products is insufficient, the mould in the timber grain cannot be killed by surface application of most consumer antifungal products. Professional treatment involves penetrating antifungal agents applied by trained operators with appropriate equipment.

Areas larger than one square metre: This is a rule of thumb from international mould remediation guidance (including the US EPA guidelines). Once mould growth exceeds approximately one square metre, the spore release from disturbance during cleaning exceeds what can be managed by an untrained person without containment equipment. Beyond this scale, professional remediation with proper containment and air filtration is required.

Mould following flooding or water damage: Flood mould is polymicrobial, often involves building materials contaminated with sewage or agricultural chemicals, and has almost certainly penetrated deep into building fabric. When the moisture source is unknown: DIY cleaning without identifying and fixing the moisture source is pointless, mould will return within weeks. DIY mould treatment can actively worsen outcomes in two main ways:

Disturbing without containing: Scrubbing mould without containment disperses spores throughout the home. In a household with mould-sensitive occupants, this can trigger significant health reactions. Professional remediation uses containment sheeting and negative pressure to prevent cross-contamination.

When the job is genuinely DIY-appropriate:

Is bleach the best DIY mould treatment?

Bleach effectively kills surface mould on non-porous surfaces and removes visible staining. However, it does not kill mould that has penetrated into porous materials (timber, plasterboard), the bleach component doesn’t penetrate, though the water in the solution does, potentially adding moisture. For non-porous surfaces, bleach is a reasonable choice. For porous materials, a purpose-formulated antifungal product that specifies penetrating action is more appropriate.

Can vinegar kill mould?

White vinegar (acetic acid) has some antifungal properties and can inhibit mould growth on surfaces. It is less effective than commercial antifungal products for killing established colonies. For very small, early-stage mould on non-porous surfaces, vinegar can be a low-toxicity alternative. For established mould, it is generally insufficient.

How do I know if my mould removal was successful?
